Pirates @ Cubs Game One Preview

After acquiring hurler Jeff Karstens from the Yankees on Saturday, the Pirates will get to see what he is made of when he makes his National League debut Friday against the first place Cubs.

Pirates: Karstens could flip-flop with Paul Maholm and pitch on Saturday, but while management makes that determination, let’s slot him in for Friday. Karstens came to Pittsburgh as part of the six-player trade that sent Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte to the Yankees on Saturday. This will be the right-hander’s first Major League appearance this season. In 2006-07, Karstens combined to make 15 appearances (nine starts) with New York, going 3-5 with a 5.65 ERA. He was 6-4 with a 3.80 ERA in 12 Triple-A starts this year.

Cubs: Marquis did not get a decision in his last start against the Marlins. He gave up six runs on nine hits and three walks over six innings, but did gut it out. Florida had opened a 5-0 lead after three innings and Marquis was able to stay in the game to save the Cubs bullpen. He made some mistakes — walking the leadoff man in the first and second innings isn’t a good idea — but was aided by a late inning rally from his teammates. He’s 2-0 with a no-decision in three starts this year against the Pirates.

Well after coming off one of the best sweeps all year the Cubs should be riding high with a ton of confidence going into this three game set against the Buccos. On paper this series would suggest the Cubs dominate the Pirates, their recent trades have left them with a much depleted offense losing Xavier Nady and slugger Jason Bay along with a few others. With tha being said, this is just coming from a twenty plus year Cub fan, it always seems the Cubs have more problems with the “not so good” teams then the ones with real talent. Like always its anybody’s game.

No data, perhaps the minimum PA's are too high?

I had to go back to 2007 cause  Jeff Karstens has not pitched in the majors this year, but as you can see there are very little stats to go off of what the Cubs have done against him. He has not faced most of the Cub hitters so it should be a interesting debut for the man.

yeah i really liked that rant on class or lack therof post-good stuff…i was thinking of somin simalier but he hit the nail on the head……….as i said before yost is the main problem,he needs to learn how to control those guys, for the most part its a young team…………i wonder where the call came from to go head-hunting for edmonds, well ive kinda always wondered,im sure some managers do and don’t make that call and most if not all are not intended harm as far as the managers go but i would’nt put anything past yost and his antics.

  17. boze says:

    more ped use:

Chicago Cubs minor league pitcher Francory Pineda was suspended 50 games Thursday after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance.

The 19-year-old righty pitched nine games in the rookie Dominican Summer League.

The commissioner’s office said Pineda tested positive for Stanozolol. The suspension took effect immediately.

  18. boze says:

Jason micheals hit a solo shot to left, followed by jack wilson who hit a hr but it was ruled a double,it hit the very tip on the yellow of the basket but it was clearly a hr,mid 6th 3-0 pirates.

  23. boze says:

  24. mikeychx says:

well, i dont give a shit if we win or lose…dont get me wrong, id like to hear the song – but with that being said

marmol was fucking filthy there…nice to see him not dicking around with spots and just overpowering hitters again

  25. boze says:

    oh well.what can you do.

  26. mikeychx says:

not really let down…know thats silly…but – plenty of chances….just too many ground balls…especially since the Cubs havent seen Karsten before…adavntage Karsten…oh well
